Raynaud's, A Real Pain in Your Extremities

Ok but who remembers the Pop-Tart print ads from 2006? They are my favorite.

From the NIH: Raynaud’s syndrome/disease/phenomenon “is a condition that causes the blood vessels in the extremities to narrow, restricting blood flow. The episodes or ‘attacks’ usually affect the fingers and toes. In rare cases, attacks occur in other areas such as the ears or nose. An attack usually happens from exposure to cold or emotional stress.” When a medical journal says something is a “rare case,” you can bet I’m in that small percentage because I’m ✨special✨

I have Raynaud’s and let me tell you, the cold can actually hurt your feet. Even in hot weather, it can feel like I’m standing on ice. I wear two pairs of socks at all times, and slippers when I’m at home. Most days, I have to use the heating pad on my feet to get the blood flowing, and it can still take about 15 minutes for it to come back. Even then it can still feel cold to me. In the cold weather, my nose gets so cold that I wish I could wear a clown nose to keep it warm lmao. 🤡 My hands get icy cold too, so I wash them in hot water often.

It’s weird. If you think you have this, ask your doctor. There’s not much you can do about it, however, I do find that the best way to avoid the ‘attacks’ is to wear as much on your feet (and hands) as possible, always. Showers and heating pads are a lifesaver too.

Back to my art… in 2006, pop tarts put out some of the best print ads I have seen to this day. Super simple and funny. The original ad (third slide) was two pop tarts sitting on top of ice cream sundaes as the “cherry” on top. One pop tart looks at the other and asks “is your butt cold?” (See my recreation of the original ad, plus other versions and a timelaspe video below).

At first, I tried drawing my pop tart on the beach to show that even in warm weather, and on warm surfaces, your feet (hands, ears, and nose) can still lose blood flow and become freezing cold.

Next, I drew the original ad and then modified it to have the other pop-tart on top of the ice cream. While this makes sense because it feels like you’re standing on something cold, I decided showing less is more, so I decided to draw a final version with my little guy on the ground.

I did one in the style of the original 2006 pop-tarts ad, and one in this more cartoonish style. Which do you like more? Let me know which one is your favorite!

My original concept to show that even in warm weather, and on warm surfaces, your feet (hands, ears, and nose) can still lose blood flow and become freezing cold.

My second Idea. While it makes sense because it feels like you’re standing on something cold, I decided showing less is more.
